Last ditch alternatives are OpenStep/Solaris and running the PC version in an emulator. You'll pay as much for a type-5 keyboard and working mouse as you would for the SS4/5/20 system, and even with a 13w3->HD15 adapter, you still need a monitor that supports SoG (Read: Sony or something equally expensive) Lastly, peripherals are expensive unless you have them sitting around. Three major downsides: They're infamously picky about booting off CD, graphics are almost always 8-bit, and RAM loadouts are usually skimpy. 712's go for 10-20$ on ebay, and they use VGA graphics and PC peripherals.

I'd recommend going with an HP 712 series or something roughly equivalent. I'd steer clear of NeXT HW unless you have an affection for the HW - even the Turbos are way too slow to use programs such as OmniWeb at a usable pace. If you really want some speed, I would grab that SuperMicro board P4 board with the ISA slots. Micronics M8S-FIN with Pentium Pro 180/256K There are obviously no PCI soundcards supported so you'll want to make sure you have some ISA slots - this may be true for NICs as well but I haven't researched this heavily. The ProAudio Spectrum 16 is the best if you can find one - the SB16 (CT1770) is also a good choice (don't know about GUS). Sound card support is limited to a handfull of of very specific card models on both platforms (ditto for NICs, but has NE2K drivers). The OS VESA driver can be used with NS with some trickery.

NS 3.3 supports IDE but lacks a a generic VESA driver so you'll need a supported video card. You have to pay particular attention to your drive controller and video card selection. NS is more sensitive to HW selection than OS. Can't speak of HPPA or Sun, but here is my $0.02 on white HW:
